The new product from Mariposa DR Foundation’s brand Upcycled Sails are now available to buy here at LEK! Laurel helped launch this project in 2016 and it’s great to see the results. It’s been a great journey, and now this fun product is coming to market.
What is Upcycling
Take something old and unusable. Repurpose it into something fabulous. Almost a form of recycling, but in recycling consumer product material is broken down into a raw form and then reused. In upcycling there’s no breaking down: a consumer product is transformed into something new.
How It Works: Upcycled Sails
Turns out sailboat racing uses A LOT of sails. They race them a couple times then it’s over for the sail. Discarded material will languish in storage before getting thrown in the dumpster. The Upcycle Sails project takes those old sails, saving them from the landfill. The material gets delivered to Cabarete. Ladies working at the Mariposa sewing room transform the sails into fun products. They earn money, and their families and the future of our community is better off. By buying Upcycled Sails you support this work, and environmental education at the Mariposa DR Foundation’s Center for Girls.
Learn more about the project in the 2017 Cabarete Sustainable Tourism Guide article. Pick up your copy for free at the Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding School shop, on the beach at Millennium Resort.
